Effortless iDRAC Setup: Without KVM
Many people are unaware that a KVM or restart isn’t necessary for reconfiguring iDRAC basic settings such as IP, MASK, and Gateway; I have an Effortless iDRAC Setup: Without KVM.
Below this text you will find the easiest way to setup an iDRAC for an initial or a reconfiguration
However, for most PowerEdge-based servers like VxRail, there exists a USB solution that eliminates the need for a KVM or an external monitor and keyboard.
Prerequisite:
- Micro-USB to USB Type-A cable
- Access to the PowerEdge Server
- Knowledge of the Admin iDRAC account password
Note: The default passwords are often “root” and “calvin,” or you may request a randomly generated one during server setup, which will be provided on an attached note.
Procedure:
Firstly, connect your laptop using the micro USB to USB Type-A cable on the little connector on the right side of the server closer to the wrench symbol 🔧.
This action will establish a network interface on your laptop with the IP address 169.254.0.4.
Now, you can use this configuration by opening your preferred web browser and navigating to the IP address: 169.254.0.3.
Please, enter the administrator password (usually “root/calvin”).
Now, you can modify the iDRAC settings and change the IP address.
Finally, don’t forget to apply the changes.
Congratulations! You’ve completed the setup of iDRAC. Isn’t this the easiest way to configure iDRAC?
Have a nice day,
Valentin
